Amanda Hall Rare Books

After reading English at Cambridge, Amanda Hall worked for Pickering and Chatto, initially as a general assistant and then as head of the English department. It was during this time that she became interested in literature in translation and the nature of cross-channel literary influences. Her first step on setting up the business in 1997 was to take an attic room in Paris and immerse herself in French books. Now based in the family home in Wiltshire, the focus of the business continues to be English and French literature of the long eighteenth century. Condition has always been a major priority in the purchase of books and it has been a matter of national pride to ensure that the English books are as authentic and handsome as their Continental counterparts. The emphasis is on the rare and unusual rather than the celebrity book. Particular interests are forbidden books, utopias, early women writers, gothic fiction, children’s books, imaginary voyages and fairy tales for children and grown-‐ups. Rarity, provenance and the beauty or story of a particular copy are what decides a purchase and for that reason, all sorts of other subjects – music, landscape gardening, art, military books, education, dance, travel – find their way into the stock.
